Hunters of the South Seas with Will Millard

In August last year I was lucky to join Indus Films to shoot the second episode of Will Millard’s debut BBC 2 series, “Hunters of The South Seas”.  Will visits the whale hunters of Lamalera on the island of Lembata in the south east of Indonesia. The Lamalerans are one of the last communities on Earth who still hunt whales using traditional methods.

I filmed using a Canon C300, with a healthy dose of GoPro footage thrown in. Will also shoots a lot of footage of himself using a handicam and AP, Fred Windsor-Clive recorded some great additional footage on a 5d. The film has been beautifully crafted by Jamie Balment and William Ennals, and i’m really proud to have worked on it.

“it’s a troubling, superbly filmed portrait of life in the raw… …The result a gripping fable about conservation and a dying way of life” – RADIO TIMES
